Narnia’s Pevensie Heroes Leap from the Silver Screen

Hurley, NY (February 15, 2008) –Walt Disney Pictures’ epic film, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe based on C.S. Lewis' timeless tale, comes to life through Robert Tonner's collection of TONNER CHARACTER FIGURES™ (TCF).

The life-like figures are authorized portraits of William Moseley in the role of Peter Pevensie; Anna Popplewell in the role of Susan Pevensie; Skandar Keynes in the role of Edmund Pevensie; and Georgie Henley in the role of Lucy Pevensie.

Robert Tonner, CEO and head designer of the award-winning Tonner Company is thrilled to re-create the magic and mystery of Narnia through his figures.  “I was intrigued when I heard about the movie.  When I saw it, I was convinced that I had to do it.”

This project has been one of the most painstaking endeavors for Tonner.  “So much of each character is in the presentation that we didn’t want to overlook a single detail,” Tonner admits.  “We drew on our strengths to accurately depict those critical elements.”

Ranging from 13”-19” tall, each perfectly replicated Pevensie sibling comes authentically dressed.  The intricate costume details range from to real buttons and lace-up shoes to custom knit sweaters.   The kings and queens of Narnia also have separate coronation costumes available which include fine details such as intricately molded crowns, hand-embroidery details and luxurious fabrics.

These wardrobe adventurers are perfectly scaled and composed of fine quality hard-plastic and vinyl.  Each TONNER CHARACTER FIGURE™ features hand-painted face details and 14-points of articulation for the most realistic poses.

About Tonner: Headquartered in Hurley, New York, the Tonner Doll Company, Inc. develops and markets high quality collectible dolls like Betsy McCall®, Effanbee® Dolls, and the popular Tyler Wentworth® line of dolls and fashions, as well as other licensed characters, including THE WIZARD OF OZ dolls and HARRY POTTER™ TCFs.

Fainting doll Designed by Marie Osmond

Marie Osmond has designed a “fainting doll”.

The porcelain figurine is dressed in a strikingly similar costume to the one the singer wore when she passed out on live television.

Although the doll is meant to be displayed standing up, Marie said it could also be presented flat on its back, mirroring the moment she hit the floor.

Marie, 48, has designed the Adora Samba Belle doll as the latest addition to her range of porcelain dolls.

The design was chosen after the entertainer gave viewers a fright when she collapsed live on Dancing with the Stars last month.

On Saturday, Lisa Hatch, from the Marie Osmond Dolls company, presented the Samba Belle doll on US shopping channel QVC.

“This is the most famous costume on the planet,” Lisa said. “Marie, as you know, had a little mishap dancing and fell - she fainted.

“This doll is officially called the Adora Samba Belle doll, but we affectionately call it the fainting doll.”

The doll, which sports a blue dress, matching blue eyeshadow and gold heels, was being sold at the discounted price of $89.94.  -Owen Williams Showbiz Spy, UK

Mansfield to Host The First Black Doll Collectors Convention

MANSFIELD, MA October 5, 2007-The Doll E Daze Project, DALLSS, Inc., and The Philadelphia Doll Museum will come together in Mansfield, Massachusetts on May 30, 2008 to June 1, 2008 to host the first of its kind Black Doll Collectors Convention (B.D.C.C). This convention will be the most exciting event in Black Doll History. “Harambee’ (Kiswahili meaning coming together) will be held at the Mansfield Holiday Inn, and is a celebration of the strengths and determination of the hosting organizations to preserve the history. Convention activities are centered on educating attendees on the significance of preserving the history of black dolls while raising funds to establish the first Black Doll Museum in New England and the second in the country.

The inspiration for the convention goes back to 2004 when Mansfield residents Debra Britt and Felicia Walker two sisters, began to exhibit more than 4,000 dolls of color throughout Massachusetts’ libraries and schools. Their vision was to celebrate black history through the eyes of a doll collector, promote culture diversity via understanding and doll making. Since 2004, library patrons, children, seniors and families have created approximately 17,000 African wrap dolls. The dolls are created exclusively with recycled materials. In response, to this demand the need to find a permanent home for the Doll E. Daze Project and Museum became evident.

Attendees will have an opportunity to view several exhibits on site as well as enjoy three full days of programs  including workshops and seminars on the history of Black Dolls; Black dolls as a teaching tool; creating furniture for your doll; jewelry making; preserving your paper dolls; the Legend of Cecilia and creating your own African Wrap doll. There will be other events such as a Fashion show, a Doll competition, and an awards luncheon honoring the executive director of the Philadelphia Doll Museum Barbara Whiteman.  In addition, each attendee will receive a souvenir doll created principally for the convention by the Big Beautiful Doll Company; designed by a local fashion designer, Amanda Keeling of Sharon, MA.  Attendees will also have a variety of shopping opportunities. Attendees can shop at the convention doll sale (members get in free) or at shops in doll town Mansfield where local businesses will exhibit dolls from the Doll E Daze Project and Museum.

The Black Doll Collectors Convention brings together dedicated collectors, historians, dealers and doll makers together to share their love for dolls of color. B.D.C.C’s mission is to promote the growth of friendship and understanding via collecting and sharing of information. The full convention program is limited to 250 attendees and reservations are now being accepted...

"Styled by Me" Barbie

Text and Photos by Michael Williams

NEW YORK CITY - On Tuesday, Jun 26, 2007, Mattel and FAO Schwarz offered a special press preview to its new "Styled by Me" Barbie doll interactive fashion show. This 1,500 square-foot, one-of-a-kind retail experience at the legendary FAO flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan offers little girls (and collectors) alike the opportunity to design their own doll and watch her strut her stuff on the runway.

The journey begins at one of two large Barbie doll styling stations with multiple interactive touch screens that guide customers through a step-by-step design process to personally select a doll, fashions, accessories, a doll case and even a gift for themselves. You can choose one of seven different dolls who feature different skin tones and hair colors as well as a wardrobe of different gowns, dresses, tops, pants and skirts.

Once the design is finalized and the doll is purchased, Barbie and friends will be loaded onto an automated runway, behind plexiglass, and will take her spin on stage before being hand-delivered to the lucky customer at the close of the show. Average retail price starts at $65 and will officially open to the public on Friday June 29, 2007, and will include Barbie fashions and luggage for girls as well as the Tarina Tarantino Barbie jewelry.

Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress

The first ever Mattel-made Lucy and Ethel gift set is finally here! I Love Lucy® has made television history as one of the most enduring, beloved shows of all time, and with good reason: what’s not to love about the show that followed the silly antics of zany redhead Lucy Ricardo, her blonde best friend Ethel Mertz, and their equally hilarious husbands?

Capture the memories with this adorable set, inspired by episode #69, Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress, which originally aired on October 19, 1953. When Lucy and Ethel accidentally buy the same formal gown for a live televised duet, each agrees to return hers, but neither follows through. Hilarity ensues when the sidekicks arrive onstage in identical frocks — a fashion faux pas to be sure! The lovable duo is portrayed here in chiffon dresses of lavender, gray and white, adorned with floral details and the characters’ signature hairstyles. An absolute must-have for Lucy lovers and Barbie® fans alike!

Agnes features a new head sculpt on the Marley Wentworth Body; Agnes can share clothing with Marley, Alice and Dorothy, but it's unlikely she would ever want to.

Gene Doll Body Upgrade Program introduced by Integrity Toys!

Information emailed to all Gene fans today:

Dear Gene fans!

What better way to start your week then with a few news bits coming from the official Gene Marshall website?

Doll Body Upgrade Program

There is an exciting Gene doll body upgrade program right around the corner!  Based on Club member and other customer suggestions, we will be producing headless articulated Gene bodies to meet the needs of our valued customers. They will be available for sale to Club members and other Gene fans alike through our shopping cart system in mid- to late- summer. These bodies will come with instructions on how to remove the heads of any of your older Gene dolls that you would like to “swap” onto a new body. The bodies will retail for US$34.99 each (plus any taxes, shipping or handling) and purchases will be limited. The bodies will all be in the pale/regular skin tone for use with Gene and Madra dolls.

In order to maintain the Integrity of the line (pun intended), the replacement bodies will be marked with the Gene Deluxe “G” logo on the buttocks.  This will allow collectors to ensure that the bodies are authorized and authentic Gene Deluxe bodies, while also separating them from the ones produced with the dolls, thus allowing future generations of collectors to distinguish whether a body has been replaced or is factory original.

We will post more information on the official Gene Marshall website (http://www.genemarshalldoll.com/) when it is available.

Madra returns and FAO Schwarz invites you to celebrate with us!

You are invited to celebrate the return of Madra Lord in New York City on Saturday June 30th, 2007! Come join Mel, Jason, Alain and the gang as we meet to say "Welcome Back!" to Madra. A special basic doll will be exclusively available to those who RSVP and attend the event at FAO that day only. This gorgeous redhead was created based on direct requests we've received from collectors in the last few months! Click on the following link to see the official invite:

MISS MANNERS: JUDITH MARTIN
Doll collection amassing criticism

June 8, 2007

DEAR MISS MANNERS: Early last year, I began collecting dolls. The hobby has brought me a lot of joy; I sew doll clothes, paint the dolls, take photographs and meet with other local enthusiasts.

Initially, friends and family thought it was cute and harmless. However, the dolls cost a few hundred dollars each, and people closest to me know this..

I am not fiscally irresponsible, even with a hobby I love, but after the most recent doll made its appearance, the reactions have turned more tepid. I get questions along the lines of, "Why are you buying more? How many do you need?"

Somehow they feel a need to voice some kind of disapproval on how I spend money on enjoyable frivolities.

Is there a proper way to communicate that I find this hurtful?

Gentle Reader: And you were kind enough not to mention that one of them spends a ridiculous amount of money on fine wines, another has a handbag collection of more than she could ever use, and a third spends so much time bird-watching that you can't imagine that spotting one more bird could possibly mean anything to him.

You can cut off criticism by saying gently, "Well, it's a hobby that a lot of other people love, but anyone who doesn't can't understand."

The National Doll and Toy Collectors Club of New York City celebrated 70 years this season with a gala luncheon at the FIT Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan on Saturday, April 28, 2007.  "Children of the 30s Luncheon" was a benefit for the children's charity Starlight Starbright of NY.

Starlight Starbright brings together experts from pediatric health care, technology, and entertainment to create programs that educate, entertain and inspire seriously ill children.  Whether it's finding friends online, learning more about a disease, or just spending time together as a family, Starlight Starbright's programs help children and their families cope with the challenges they face daily.  Research studies on select Starlight Starbright programs have shown the following benefits:  Reduced pain and distress; a reduction in the fear and isolation of a prolonged illness; a greater willingness to return for treatment; an increased sense of peer support; increased knowledge and sense of responsibility for managing disease; much needed distraction from challenges that accompany their illness; and increased ability to cope with their disease.

Raffles, auction, sales and more raised money and spirits in the lead up to the afternoon's star appearance.  Keynote speaker Tom Tierney, the legendary designer of paper dolls for DOVER press, presented a program on his "Creative Process & History."  Souvenir package included Ginny "Little Miss 30's" Exclusive LE 100 by Vogue Doll Co., autographed Tierney paper dolls & prints book and a goody bag full of surprises!  Tickets sold on a first come, first serve basis at $80 per person.  For more information on the NDTCC of NYC, please contact the following:
